My Summer Camp

By Dan Wilcox

My Summer Camp was in Delmar

walking along Kenwood Ave.

Furman Place, Pineview Ave.

to the 4 Corners

carrying a canvas bag with the afternoon

Knickerbocker News 6 days a week

folded papers tossed to porches & stoops

my hands stained black by fresh newsprint ink

My Summer Camp was

my Winter camp

my Spring camp

my Autumn camp

My Summer Camp was my own earned money

to buy comic books, ice cream sodas

a Bic pen, a composition notebook

trips on the city bus to Albany

to a used book store to buy poetry

with my newspaper money

My Summer Camp was

not out “in the country”

not in school

not with teachers

not in Church

not with priests

not with parents

not with camp counselors

My Summer Camp was me

was my Camp of Life

was me becoming me

working everyday

being me
